Acquisition: a corporate takeover, when one company buys or absorbs another company, ingests it into its own company, makes it part of its own
Big fish: top dog, head honcho, leader, person on top, big, weighty in importance and presence, powerful
Shareholders: people who own a share, or piece of stock in a company
Lay them off: put them out of work, they are no longer needed, they are off the job, out, not necessarily fired, but no longer needed, their position is no longer in existence
This happens when companies take over other companies, sometimes companies only purchase the company for the technology, the business, the money, but you don’t necessarily need or want the workers, so you “lay them off.”
Could be a battle: a fight, a conflict, there will be legal and corporate arguing, argument, discussion, a verbal discourse, a sparring of words and ideas, point counter point, I say one thing, you say another, I put forward this idea and you reject it with another. There will be much talking and discussion before a conclusion will be reached, it will be a battle of wit and words, and influence. The top dog, or the person with the most persuasive argument will win the battle.
