Reframing Success and Failure
Review
This is absolutely essential to learning.
For those that were there last time, a chance to share and reinforce what they learned. For the new people, this is a chance to learn from the previous lesson.
What worked and what didn’t?
What is Successful Communication to ME?
We all have an image of what successful communication should be like, and perhaps, even have some examples of when our language served us well. Sharing examples of when we were pleased with our English ability and creating a clear picture of what think we want from language ability for us to feel successful will help us as a group and as individuals to come to clarity on what it is we think we are looking for.
What is Unsuccessful Communication?
Chances are we also all have experiences of our language failing us, or of experiences when our ability did not match our expectations. This could be as recent as today, or as long ago as elementary school. These experiences in the past or our imagined failures in the future can inhibit our ability to fully access our current language ability. By exploring these thoughts and experiences, we will be looking to find more helpful ways of looking at our past and our future. Ways that will better allow us to fully access all the language that is waiting to be used.
Heads I Win, Tails You Lose.
When I was a child, my older brother used to try to play this game with me. “Flip a coin, heads I win, tails you lose,” he would say. Sad to say, it actually worked the first time. In this exercise we look at what are our current winning strategies for utilizing and improving our English and will explore alternative strategies.
One More Thing, One Less Thing
We finish the session by each of us creating a plan for the immediate future. We will all choose one more (new) thing to try, and one less (current) thing to continue doing.
